What You Should Know About the Vibrant Pianos on State
Each October marks the Arts and Humanities month for Santa Barbara, CA. What better way to celebrate this than through a unique combination of art and music available to artists and the public alike? As you walk down State Street in October, you’ll find a delightful phenomenon: follow the sound of tinkling notes, and you’ll stumble across a series of painted pianos open for all to play. This is due to the lively Pianos on State, now in its ninth year.
What is Pianos on State?
Pianos on State is a collaborative, artistic event inspired by similar events across the nation. It takes place each October on State Street in downtown Santa Barbara. This is the ninth year that it will occur, and this year, the pianos will be on display for a longer period, from October 2nd-24th. Local artists paint a series of pianos which are then on display along State Street for the public to play! This colorful, fun event is designed to be an opportunity for local and professional artists to collaborate and showcase their work and share it with the public. Its goal is also to expose people of all ages to the arts and get them excited about it through this interactive musical experience.
Various organizations from Santa Barbara come together to support this colorful event. Participating artists are given a budget, supplies, a piano, and free license to transform the pianos into vibrant works of art. Once on display, anyone is welcome to play the pianos. Try your hand at the piano, or stroll down State Street to listen. You might be treated to impromptu performances by amateurs or professionals or even groups; you never know! The spontaneous nature of this event in large part adds to the magic and fun.
